linux tutorial
switching to linux does have a bit of a learning curve but if you're willing to have a sit down and sort it out the benefits are awesome, and you get to learn new computer skills.
i recommend switching to an os that is similar to windows, such as mint linux. this isn't the first os i've used but its very casual and meets all my needs. there are tutorials on youtube on how to install it on your computer, but its a simple set up. be sure to backup your files. if you're very computer illiterate watch a few before attempting to install so you'll have a stronger grasp on what you're doing.
Tumblr media
the taskbar doesnt come like that i just like it on the side lol. you can simply open the software manager to download programs that have a linux version
Tumblr media
if theres a program that only has a windows version, you can download wine to run them
Tumblr media
depending on what you use your computer for, you may come across programs that do not have a linux version, are not compatible with wine, and do not have a linux equivalent. when this happens you can use a virtual machine running windows to run the program, but to be honest this has only happened to me once for a very specific hobby, and i use my computer for proper computer science college work and my own hobbies. but the option is there.
anyways, if a program you want to use isnt available or isnt easy to install, simply google what apps are similar for linux
Tumblr media
i recently downloaded krita but i havent used it much bc i mostly draw on my ipad, but from little ive used it its pretty good. gimp is also a good substitute for photoshop. here's a quick sketch i did in krita
Tumblr media
steam games that only have a windows version can be played by using proton in the compatibility settings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in this short tutorial i did not open the terminal once, and in my opinion a somewhat computer illiterate person may not have to use it since the os comes with apps to help navigate software installation and more, but learning how to use the terminal is a good skill to have!
if you have a technical issue that you absolutely cannot solve, there are forums that are active where people will help you. no bean dads. im also willing to answer questions for small troubleshooting problems.
switching to linux will improve your computer skills and give you access to many open source programs that are the equivalent to paid or subscription programs on windows. there's a strong community of people that are willing to help you and teach you, for free!

one thing about being in too much pain to uphold social niceties (period and it's a bad one) is that i did spend all day at work not only doubled over and moving at a pace the ninety year old library ladies were lapping but i was even worse than usual at tasks like Looking At People Who Are Chewing Gum and "not edging away bugeyed when a coworker stands close next to me" and of course the perennial favorite "keeping track of more than three words spoken to me in a row and responding to that" and we'll let me merely say. it is just me and that murderbot. nobody else in this whole damn library understands
#(we catalogued a bunch of martha wells today and it was very apropos)#i just think. when im wounded and dripping secret fluids you can't expect me to keep up with this other shit is all#bookbot doesnt have any combat skills but it does have a faster search than the opac computer#so as soon as it remembers how sentences and conveyance of the searched information works you'll be in the business#augggggh and it was so busy too!!!111 and the guy who monologues on the phone called again and he always starts his calls with#'HEY darlin'!' fuck off robert call me darlin one more time. motherfucker#this is linux robert. we really dislike getting calls from linux robert. robert i'm blind is a different cooler guy#robert im blind is a blind guy named robert who introduces himself in those exact words. and he calls every solstice#in order to find out the exact time the solstice or equinox begins . i always wonder what rituals hes performing#linux robert merely wants to bother our IT department about the minutea of ubuntumint or whatever .no matter how many times we tell him NO#he cannot accept that our IT staff is busy keeping the whole county's library system running and cannot be his personal home computer staff#and that it is highly unlikely one of them would let him burn his custom linux mods onto the public library computers#(i THINK that's what he's trying to do. he is not great at explaining in what one might call. layman's terms. despite being The Explainer)#linux robert is deeply on the spectrum but guess what dude! so am i and so am your little brother who i went to grade school with#at least 25% of our patron base is on the spectrum the library is a very autistic place to be#autism doesnt exclude a guy from being a real annoying pain in the ass who calls you darlin condescendingly#his brother is a wonderful guy. i used to hang out with him at lunch bc his tss had adopted me as a sort of pseudoclient#she clocked my twelve year old weird and said oh ive got room for one more. so jon and i were like two chicks under the wing#and my good sixth grade buddy jon would never call me unsolicited endearments. because first of all he's literally nice#and second of all our favorite thing to do together was not talk#WHEW. anyway. long ass day . my coworker and i have resolved one of these days to clearly tell robert not to do that please#because otherwise he wont know . but it's also possible someone's already told him this and he just doesnt care

sell me on yiffos without using the letter E or barking
can i howl? a brain such as my own can fail to find words to fit into such a tricky condition
yiffos is a fantastic option for a distribution wholly faithful to maintaining an outward front of yiff consumption to any body looking on you with a suspicion that you, in fact, do not look at yiff on a daily basis. Running with it as an addition to your basic input/output program is as if you stay, constantly, grasping at and analyzing striking and artistic possibly pornographic crafts of all forms of anthropomorphic animals. you will find your body and mind in a vast and rich world of humanistic dogs, rats, big cats or six-foot-two bats, all of which may sport a lack of pants or bras, or both.
Anything contrary to this goal is simply a way to show off your prodigality to a passing of any particular occasion. Pragmatically, if you do no carry a wish to display a proclivity of yiff consumption to a fault is not your plan, as shown with your indication that i cannot bark, why study this distribution's utility? run along, scallywag! you will not find dissipation in your goal to troll an old and graying wolf-dog such as I! my distribution is archaic, its programs carry a proclivity for fucky, fatal flaws for a notion of unassailability typically sought from such a critical part of such a combination of silicon and algorithm such as that which is a driving topic of this ask.
anyway: awooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

i want to share two neat useful linux utilities i found
first is KDiskMark, which lets you benchmark disk speeds! it works on partitions, so you can also benchmark filesystems and stuff. it has nothing to do with KDE, which is weird
second is compsize, it's a terminal tool for btrfs. you give it a subvolume and it shows you the amount of data using each kind of compression and how much space it's saving you

in related news (re:the "art person pretending to be a tech person" thing) i keep getting the urge to install linux mint, which i KNOW is the devil talking. i would not have fun doing that. i would want to die the entire week it would probably take me to set it up. regardless, the siren song of an os that doesn't seem to hate me for using it is undeniably enticing.

Fuck Linux.
Everytime I complain about a minor issue with Windows I get like 6000 tech bros falling over themselves to screech "JUST USE LINUX" at me. No. I won't use Linux. I have a full time job, medical issues I'm dealing with, friends I wanna hang out with, a game I'm starting work on slowly but surely, and hobbies that have nothing to do with software, and responsibilities as an adult who lives with other people on top of all of those things. And when you consider that combination of obligations and things I enjoy doing and want to do there's not much time for me spending 8 hours fighting with an operating system to make it run the EXEs for the emulators I like.
I don't have the time, will, nor desire to spend days upon days or possibly even weeks struggling through IT bullshit to make my computer do all the things I want to do. The windows computer I already have already works with at least 85% of those things right out of the box.
Sure, fuck Microsoft (though Valve is an awful company to buy LinuxBros get mad when you acknowledge that), and Windows has tons of issues of its own not including the outdated ones MACbros like Dankpods who's barely touched the operating system since Windows 7 think are still relevant (Yes I said something negative about Australian retro funnyman, cry about it.)
I am perfectly happy dealing with the annoying administrative permission issues, inexplicable performance drops doing something it handled perfectly fine yesterday, or apps not closing sometimes even when I go through task manager. Those and many other issues are all annoying but I'm accustomed to them.
My only direct experience with Linux in the last few years has been on my steam deck, and every problem I've had with the steam deck has come entirely from trying to download things through Desktop mode and having to deal with Linux. If there isn't a native Linux version of the program I want to run I have to jump through hoops after hoops doing research for hours as I try multiple methods, most of which fail and the rest seem promising then just won't successfully install for some inexplicable reason. Eventually like the 58th thing I try finally works and then I try and get something else working and that somehow BREAKS THE PREVIOUS THING!
All of which is compounded by this software having no native support for any of this so there's no official Linux support line I can reach out to for further assistance. I have to look up guides or forum posts and pray to the god I don't believe in that they're up to date which 9/10 times they aren't.
I'm glad you techbros enjoy spending 40 hours a week getting Linux to work for you, but I don't want every little thing I do on my computer to be a full time job. I have a lot of other shit going on in my life, including things I actually enjoy doing, and I don't have time. I'll stick with the operating system that works out the box.

Linix-Unix-BSD Laptop Journey~~ (and some questions again)
yet another question~~ tho up to my own musings and uncertainty at this point~~
I'm too afraid to try to install FreeBSD cause I'm worried I won't be able to dig up some needed internet info and that makes me feel dumb~~ is the Domain Name not the Hostname or name of the wifi? or would it be my ISP's website or something?
I like tech but not knowing this makes me feel stupid lol even though I'm probably not~~~ and that's just anxiety lying to me~~~
also is there any point in moving from Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 to Debian 11 disks that I have burned?
the only one with the zoom feature (unless I install something if I can find it) is the Cinnamon Desktop, and at that point I see no point on dropping Mint for pure Debian in that case....
need accessibility for my blind butt (despite also being stubborn and not using it half the time anyway lol)
ALSO none of the debian live CDs that I tried saw my WIFI and idk why~~ and they're all debian 11...
might need to download newer versions and burn them to disk I guess~~
or maybe if I installed one of them anyway, and actually hooked it to ethernet, then installed updates whether it would see my wifi then? idk
found a distro that doesn't use SystemD called PCLinuxOS and thought about giving that a try, but idk if it's good for someone like me, but I got a handle sort of on fedora back in the day.
So currently stuck on linux mint debian edition cause I'm afraid to give freebsd a try due to maybe not having the network information requited and idk where to find it~~ and cause debian just straight up wouldn't see my wifi~~ tho I've also said before in this post that idk if it's a good idea or not to go from linux mint debian, to straight debian.... cause I'm going to be stuck with the Cinnamon desktop anyway~~
like yesterday I spent all morning booting into all the debian live CDs that I had; except for the standard which I think is GNOME, and none of them could even SEE my wifi or ANY wifi
now I hate that I seem like the person that just wants things to work instead of tinker w stuff to get it to work, cause that's part of the fun and frustration of being on linux I suppose~~~ and I really hope I'm smart enough to figure stuff out~~
would be happy to eventually jump to a more unix like OS cause I believe the backbone of the internet is UNIX anyway~~ :)
I like to think I'm a nerd and a techie but at the same time think I'm stupid and don't know anything~~ if I'm being brutally honest w myself~~ but I guess you got to be feeling stupid to learn huh?
tldr; and making the questions more easily found~~ my journey through linux/bsd computer systems so far, and where I'm at....
Is it worth it to install pure debian if I'm already using linux mint debian (and the wifi actually works), should I get away from SystemD and try to install PCLinuxOS? or FreeBSD? am I smart enough to install FreeBSD? What network information do I need and where can I find it?
and yet another random question at the bottom cause I remembered a linux youtube channel where they talked about a bunch of stuff way back in the 2010s I think called "Jupiter Broadcasting" what happened to them?
wanted to go eventually to FreeBSD cause it's more unix like than linux, and i think more cohesive as a whole as opposed to bits and pieces mossaic'd together in linux.... also if it is more unix based, unix as far as I'm aware is the backbone of the internet if I'm remembering correctly~~ and I'd be happy to use it~~~
so idk what I'm doing~~ lol, stay on linux mint debian cause it works? try to get FreeBSD installed, try to find out how to fix debian not seeing my WIFI (I'd hoped that if I installed it and connected it to ethernet that updates would fix that), or install PCLinuxOS that I found? cause it looks neat~~~
more history about myself~~ as dumb as it sounds, or maybe not, my dad was into tech, he'd built his first computer and if it wasn't for him pirating some version of windows, we never would've had it, lol. but ye he was a techie, and he showed me the 1995 movie "hackers". I watched that on repeat through my teenage years for some reason~~ the music was good, and now I learnt that that's not actually bow hacking works, lol it's a cheesy film.... but that sparked an interest in technology and eventually led me to finding linux to begin with. and Unix~~ cause I thought it was something that my dad and I could do together~~~ but we never did...... but the techie interest stuck~~~~ I need to rewatch that film and find the soundtrack CDs I have~~~ been a while~~~~
second guessing it am I even smart enough to run anything other than linux mint anyway? probably yes but I doubt my own intelligence, lol. especially I think anyone irl I've shown my writing to or talked to say that I'm "smart as a whip" but I don't see it.... :(
